Know Your Metals and Stones

Before you begin, understand what you’re working with. Gold jewellery comes in different karats, with 18K being a KEFI favourite for its perfect balance of luxury and durability. Diamonds, while incredibly hard, can still be loosened if cleaned carelessly. If your jewellery includes other gemstones — emeralds, pearls, or opals — pause here. They require gentler, specialised care and shouldn’t be cleaned in the same way as gold and diamond pieces.

Gentle Cleaning Solution

Skip the harsh chemicals. Mix a safe cleaning bath at home:

  • Fill a small bowl with warm (not hot) water.
  • Add a few drops of mild dish soap.
  • Swirl to mix - the water should be slightly soapy, not foamy

  • Place your jewellery into the solution for 15–20 minutes.
  • Gently swirl the bowl occasionally to help dislodge debris.

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently brush each piece.
  • Focus on crevices around the diamond, around prongs, and along clasps.
  • Always brush away from settings to avoid loosening stones.

  • Rinse under lukewarm running water (use a strainer if needed).
  • Pat dry with a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel.

  • Use a clean microfibre cloth to remove water spots and restore shine.

  • No ultrasonic cleaners unless the piece is in perfect condition.
  • No soaking for gemstone-accented pieces like pearls or turquoise.
  • No abrasive cleaners or toothpaste.
